Criss Angel Sucks

Criss Angel > HAHA > Losers — @ 10:54 pm

Apparently, wannabe magician Criss Angel has finally gotten what he deserves. Ha! According to ReviewJournal.com:

Criss Angel fans flew in from as far away as London to see his new Cirque du Soleil show open at the Luxor on Friday. The verdict by many? Creatively, “Believe” is a possibly unsalvageable “waste of time” and a “dead end” that literally bored some audience members to sleep.

On Saturday night, reaction was even worse.

“Everyone in the bathroom was chanting ‘bullshit’” from the urinals, Damon Ranger of Chicago told me Saturday. “It was absolutely awful. You can ‘Believe’ how bad it is — because it’s terrible!”

People streamed out of the theater on Saturday screaming about how poor it was. A group of six women was led by a woman yelling furiously, demanding their money back.

“Dude, it’s a train wreck,” Ranger said. On a scale of 1 to 10, he declared “Believe” a zero.

I didn’t see the show, which stars the TV illusionist in a Cirque performance, because I wanted to purely chronicle fan reaction to one of the most anticipated new shows on the Strip in some time, a show that is said to have cost in the ballpark of $85 million.

So I interviewed more than a dozen people after Friday’s and Saturday’s shows, and I listened to groups chat after they exited the theater. They weren’t just disappointed. Some were enraged.

Walter Huertas lives in Las Vegas and has seen every Cirque show here. On a scale of 1 to 10, he gave it a 1. He coaxed a friend to go. They left 20 minutes before the end of Friday’s debut.

“There’s no magic in it,” Huertas said.

Huertas knows Angel for his “antics” and death-defying stunts from his “Mindfreak” show on A&E. But he said “Believe” has no compelling storyline, and it’s more about dancing and unimpressive tricks, like pulling doves from a sleeve.

“It’s something that should be in a variety show,” he said. “It’s about a bunch of ‘rabbits’ dancing around in costume.”

Huertas equated the quality of “Believe” to that of Mandalay Bay’s disastrous old “Storm” show. If you ever saw “Storm,” you realize how dismal that comparison is.

Two other Angel fans, Steve Moffett and Jordan Wilson, flew in from London for Friday’s debut.

“We were hysterical about coming. We came. It was a waste of time,” Wilson said. “The magic’s not even magic.”

They complained they could see wires and stage holes used in unconvincing acts.

“Belief was not suspended once,” said Moffett, who called the show a “dead end.” “They fake an accident at the beginning, and it sets the tone of the rest of the show — fake.”

“David Copperfield is better, and he’s a boring old” guy, Moffett said.

Wilson said it should be called “Criss Angel — Don’t Believe.”

Moffett and Wilson walked out before the ending, because Angel started singing the finale, a cover of his “Mindfreak” TV theme song.

“He broke into song. I said, ‘He’s singing. Now we’re leaving,’” Wilson said.

They thought he was lip-syncing. Ranger did, too: “I’m a musician. It’s lip-syncing. The audio wasn’t matching the video.”

On a scale of 1 to 10, Moffett gave it a 4; Wilson a 3.

Like most people I interviewed, they thought Cirque’s background elements were great. Wilson said the red-motif set design is “phenomenal,” costumes are “good,” the dancers are fine, and the proscenium arches are “elegant.”

Kevin Saum of Chicago added, “The Cirque music is awesome.”

But despite the best elements, Angel’s show is appalling, Saum said. On a scale of 1 to 10, Saum deemed it a 3.

“It’s embarrassing to put the Cirque name on it,” Saum said. “He walks around the whole time and doesn’t do anything. It’s not his TV show. It’s just really bad.”

Saum and his friend Ranger flew in for a “bro’s” weekend, specifically to see “Believe” plus Foo Fighters at the Hard Rock. They loved Foo Fighters. They hated “Believe” so much Ranger exited the theater by calling out to random people in the Luxor to not see it.

“They were drawing people in with the Criss Angel (fan base), and they drew us in, and we were very disappointed,” said Saum, who usually loves Cirque shows. “The whole storyline is dumb.”

There are caveats. Some planned elements weren’t ready by Friday. And all Vegas shows get tweaked in the months after they open.

A few theatergoers said “Believe” doesn’t appear to be salvageable to them, though. Others said it might be OK if changed in coming months. Saum wasn’t so sure.

“We understand there are kinks to work out. But this is about more than kinks,” Saum said.

Saum and Ranger were in the cheap seats, in the back, and even from there they could see through illusionlike performances.

“Usually in a Cirque show, you don’t see wires. You see the wires all the time,” Saum said.

Julie Schmidt went to see Friday’s show with her daughter, Caitlin, and with Joe Sposato. All three of the Coloradoans deemed it a 4 or 5 out of 10. That’s the highest praise I heard.

“The guy next to me was sound asleep,” Julie Schmidt said.

She said “Believe” is “artistic and creative,” “but it was like there were five shows, and they couldn’t decide which one to do.”

The five subshows were, she said: Cirque performances; good dancers; poor magic; “him off doing something else behind the scenes”; and the go-nowhere storyline.

“You can see the openings on the floor” for the illusion-esque acts, Julie complained.

“The magic he did do was basic,” Sposato said.

“I thought it was going to be more like his show” on TV, Caitlin said.

John and Gail Michalak came from Los Angeles to see “Believe” with Karla Delemos. On the 1-to-10 scale, John gave it a 1; Gail a 3; and Delemos didn’t rate it — she fell asleep.

“I just got screwed,” John said. “He pulled three doves out of his hat. Go to the Magic Castle in L.A. if you want to see magic. But don’t come here.”

John said fans were also upset they had to turn in their cell phones before entering the theater.

“Everybody said the biggest ‘Mindfreak’ is you’re gonna get your phone back,” he griped. “Never have I wanted to get my money back. I want my money back.”

Hearing him say that, Gail warned him about Angel’s tough-guy image: “John, you’re gonna have him knocking on your door!”

“They need to know if it’s not good,” John insisted.

But Gail said the show is salvageable if the magic acts are perfected.

And Ranger was glad about one thing. After spending $55 for cheap seats — tickets are discounted by 25 percent during these first run of “ticketed previews” — he was given a free drink coupon.

“The best thing was getting this free drink coupon - the worst $55 Bud Light I’ll ever have.”

Hmmmm, would you guys pay $55 for that shitfest?

Britney Pays Surprise Visit to Z100!

Britney Spears > Yay! — @ 10:19 pm

Totally unexpected! Britney Spears paid a surprise visit to the New York radio station, Z100, today! Check out the video below for the interview plus the full version of her new hit single, “Womanizer“. This is definitely proof that the old (but improved) Britney is back and ready to talk the music world by storm again! During her visit to Z100, she talks about “Womanizer”, her CONFIRMED world tour next year, New York and how much she misses it, and how she felt “Piece Of Me” didn’t deserve to win so many awards. She goes on to say:

“It’s a cool video, but I think by far I’ve done videos that are way better, so I was really shocked that it got the award. It was just inspiring, though, because now, going forward with the videos that I’m doing now, I can really go there and do something crazy and see what happens.”

Paris’ BFF

New Music > Paris Hilton > Television — @ 10:07 pm

With Paris Hilton’s new reality show, Paris Hilton’s My New BFF, premiering today, she has decided to play off of the generated buzz by releasing a new single on the same day. The new single is called “My BFF“, and sounds almost exactly like all of her other ‘hit’ songs.. The song will become her new reality show’s theme song. And in the song, she sings:

“All my life I’ve been waiting for someone I can trust, someone who will tell me the truth - even when it’s the hard thing to say.”

Aweeeee. Paris sounds lonely these days! But if you wish to check it out the song, look below.

Also, check out the plot of the “My BFF” singer’s new show (according to Reuters.com):

Sixteen women and two men — both gay — were selected from some 300,000 applicants to compete for the honor of being Hilton’s best buddy, accompanying her to red carpet events and simultaneously dodging and courting the paparazzi.

They enter a predominantly pink and sparkly world of challenges ranging from make-overs — resisted at their own peril — to dealing with lost luggage, private jets and looking hot on a rollercoaster.

At the end of each of the 10 episodes, one contestant is dismissed by a wand-waving Hilton with a catch phrase borrowed from instant messaging culture — TTYN (Talk To You Never).

Our Interview With Dead In A Daydream

Interviews — @ 5:16 pm

Another interview today, guys! :) This time, we got to interview Dead In A Daydream, who happens to be an amazing acoustic/pop duo. Be sure to check them out on Myspace by clicking HERE. Thanks again for the interview, guys!

1. Where do you get most of your musical inspiration from?
I get alot of my inspiration from dave melillo. He came and played at this small venue in michigan when i was like 15 and he just blew me away. i started writing musically seriously after that. I was definitley upset when i found out that he was taking a break from his music to play with cute is what we aim for.

2. Where’s your guys’ favorite place you’ve performed at so far, if you have one?
My favorite place to play is definitely a place called The Flood Cafe in St Clair Shores, MI. Probably cause its just where it all started. I’m best friends with the girls who booked there and they are the ones who first gave me a chance to perform.

3. Who are your favorite bands (or solo acts) to perform with?
I really like performing with a band called which way is home. They’re awesome. I’d suggest them to anyone. Also, I love playing with The Years Gone By, and Audio Summer.

4. Are you guys working on new music?
Yeah we are pretty much always working on new music. At this current moment were planning on going back to the studio in december right after christmas. But, we have kinda been in talks about another tour that we’ll have more info to give out if we end up going.

5. What’s your favorite song to perform live?
My favorite song to perform live is searching for that something. I love the harmonies in that song and mike and i have a good time playing that one.

6. What’s your fanbase like so far? Mostly girls, mostly guys, etc.?
Our fanbase has generally been girls. I’d say between 13-17 on average. We love all of our fans though.

7. You added another member, Mike, to the band not too long ago. How has that changed things for the band? (number of fans, etc.)
Well since i’ve released recordings with mike on them things have been taking off. in june we were getting about 30 plays a day and had 6000 plays total. we’ve gotten about 100000 plays in the last 3 months. Mike has definitely had a profound effect on the band. oh yeah, and the girls love his eyes. Lol.

Our Interview with Saving Jane!

Interviews — @ 2:16 pm

We got the chance to interview Saving Jane, who are most notable for their hit singles “Girl Next Door” and “Happy”, on September 29th (today)! Check out the interview we had below (with lead singer Marti):

1. Are there any plans to release more singles from your new album, SuperGirl?
We would like to release another song by the end of the year, but we’re not sure which one it will be yet.

2. How has being famous effected you in your professional and personal life?
We’re still on a small enough scale that we don’t recognized that much, so it hasn’t changed anything. If anything, I get the best of both worlds, because I can get cool stuff like clothing and concert tickets, but I still get to go to the grocery store in my pajamas!

3. What’s the craziest thing that’s happened to you at/during a show?
A very long time ago, before Saving Jane was even a band, I used to perform in an acoustic act with Pat. One night we were playing at a bar on Ohio State’s campus and this lady came in, obviously pretty intoxicated, and sat down right in front of us…about 5 minutes later she started projectile vomiting. Not an experience I care to repeat.

4. Where do you get most of your musical inspiration from?
Most of my songs are written about things that are happening in my life or that I dealt with in the past.

5. Who are your favorite bands (or solo acts) to perform with?
I don’t know that we have a favorite band to perform with-we are happy to share the stage with anybody who is passionate, talented, and fun to hang out with!

6. What’s your favorite song (out of all your albums) to perform live?
One of my favorites in the set is “What I Didn’t Say”..it’s such an emotional song, I really enjoy singing it.

7. If you could say one thing to all your fans, what would it be?
Thank you for allowing us to do what we do!

Our Interview with 1931!

Interviews — @ 8:54 pm

We got the chance to interview the band, 1931 today (September 28th). They are probably THE best metal band you will ever hear! Check out the interview below.

1. Where do you get most of your musical inspiration from?
We get our inspiration from all over the place. Sometimes it comes from other music, and sometimes it comes from other places most people might not think of…for example, one of us might have a really awesome day and just pick up a guitar and just crank out all of these killer riffs just because the mood was right that day.

2. Are you guys working on an album?
We are in the writing process of our new album, we have a few songs written now, but as of right now we don’t have a name picked out.

3. Where’s your guys’ favorite place you’ve performed at so far, if you have one?
Oh man, this is a hard one. Pretty much we love playing everywhere. If there are kids at a show who are truly enjoying themselves, I love that, because it reminds me of when I was like 14 years old going to shows and having a blast. It’s cool when stuff like that comes full circle, seeing bands when you were young and feeling so cool because they actually talked and hung out with their fans, and then seeing kids act the same way with your band. It rules because we’re all just dudes who like playing metal and shit…but if we can be an inspiration to somebody, that is awesome.

4. After having gone through so many band members, what has it taught you guys?
Well after all of the lineup changes, it’s taught us that nothing lasts forever, granted we wanna play metal until we’re dead, chances are you aren’t going to be able to play with the same guys your entire life. I would love to say “yeah we’ve had the same lineup for four years” but shit happens… people move on with their lives, people flake on you, people get kicked out, anything you can think of, it happens. You pretty much have to just go with the flow and keep focusing on doing what you love.

5. What’s the craziest thing that’s happened to you guys on tour?
This is a tough one… let me think… Ok, so we were in Jacksonville, Florida last summer while we were touring, and after our show at The Pit, we needed a place to crash, but unfortunately there wasn’t anywhere we could stay. So we ended up driving down the street to just chill out all night at the beach… little did I know we were about to come up on some weird ass shit. We get to the beach and we’re hanging out for a while, and then these two guys come up and start talking to us. Let it be known that these guys had just gotten out of prison and their names were fucking OUTLAW and DOPE BOY. I mean what the fuck is that all about? Anyways, these guys are just super sketchy all night, not really hanging around us, but still kind of hanging around. We made it to dawn before everybody passed out in the hot ass oven we call “the van” all covered in sand. We finally wake up and walk down to the McDonald’s like a block away, come back, and to our surprise, SOME FUCKING ASSHOLE ROBBED OUR VAN. Ipods, phones, cameras, clothing, bags, all that shit was gone, and all we can think is “MOTHERFUCKING OUTLAW AND DOPE BOY”. The moral of this story is “don’t trust dudes you meet on the beach at 2AM, you’re in for trouble if you do.”

Also Kevin made out with Matt that night….

6. Who are your favorite bands (or solo acts) to perform with?
Every Bridge Burned on Rise Records! Those dudes by far have been our best friends and brother band for a long time. Go pick up their album AUN APRENDO today! We also love playing with our dudes in By The Sins Fell Angels, TTEOTD, Days Fade, and all of our other Ohio homies.

Thanks again guys! Good luck with your music! Be sure to check them out on their Myspace by clicking HERE.
